create better meta-descriptions from google

Off late, Google has released few new recommendations about creating better meta-descriptions for Google search results. Apart from that, Google is also playing its own role in improving meta-descriptions by creating a noteworthy update on how they are rendered. Meta-descriptions are indeed one of the most vital tools for search engine optimizers and for Google but very few optimizers are actually aware of how to create worthy meta-descriptions.

Meta-descriptions – How Google generates them?

While determining which information to show in the snippet of some search result, Google will first check out the content within that page and extract few of the most relevant and crucial information. During an event when the content of a page doesn’t have enough relevant source based on the query of the user, Google will automatically turn to manually written meta-descriptions which show a search snippet.

Previously, when the content of the page was not the only relevant source for creating a snippet and there wasn’t any meta-description, Google would retrieve information from DMOZ. As DMOZ is now closed, Google has stopped depending on the web directory for displaying snippets.

As that is said, it has become even more important for website owners to write good meta-descriptions. Google even moves on to explain what it deems to be a worthy meta-description. According to Google, good meta-descriptions are more like short blurbs which accurately describe the page content. They work like the pitch which convinces the user that the page is accurately what the users are looking for.

The most common issues which the website owners need to look for while creating meta-descriptions is not creating them at all. One more issue to take into account is using the very same meta-description for all the web pages throughout the site. Apart from these, there are some other issues like writing off-topic things, poor quality meta-descriptions and spammy content.

As per what Google says, there is technically no limit to character for meta-descriptions but they will be fitted according to the width of the device on which they’re being viewed. Moving forward the NOODP robots directive, this prevented Google from utilizing DMOZ to create snippets and these are no longer to be used.

So, before posting some good and relevant content, you should make sure you include a good meta-description which abides by the standards of Google!
